  What to do if You Smell Gas

If you have an emergency, call emergency helpline and provide them with the following information:

  1. Name
  2. Addresses or Location
  3. Telephone Number
  4. Type of Building or Site
  5. Type and strength of odor
  6. Location of Odor (Inside by appliance or outside by the meter or site)

Specified work should be done according to different situations:

If you notice a slight smell of gas:

  • Open doors and windows.
  • Call Emergency help lines immediately.

If the smell gets stronger or is accompanied by a "hissing" noise:

  • Remain calm.
  • Leave the house immediately, leaving the doors and windows open.
  • Call Emergency help lines from a safe distance.

If you smell gas outside:

  • Call Emergency help lines.
  • Keep clear of the area and keep doors and windows closed.
  • Put out all open flames.

If you see a gas fire:

  • Call your local fire department.
  • Do not attempt to put out the fire yourself and never use water on burning gas.

If you are near a gas leak do not:

  • Turn electrical switches or appliances, etc. on or off.
  • Use a cellular telephone.
  • Start any motors or motor vehicles
  • Use lighters or matches or smoke.

If you smell gas indoors or outdoors:

  • Don't use your telephone or cellular phone. Call from a neighbor¡¯s phone.
  • Don't turn any electrical switches, appliances or computers on or off.
  • Don't smoke or use lighters or matches.
  • Don't start any motors or motor vehicles near the gas leak.
